England Not Good Enough ‘Yet’ – Lampard

Frank Lampard has spoken of his frustrations of not being a medal winner on the national stage with one of the world’s most talented teams on paper, as the Three Lions prepare to take on Republic of Ireland and Brazil in the upcoming friendlies.

Lampard has played 95 matches for England so far, and has successfully netted 28 goals, not including the controversially disallowed goal against the United States in a recent World Cup. Despite having a talented side and individual class, Lampard has not won a single trophy with England. However, his domestic accomplishments tell a different story, as Lampard is not only Chelsea’s all-time top scorer, but also one of the most decorated players, having won the Barclays Premier League 3 times, UEFA Champions League once, FA Cup 4 times and the League cup 2 times.

England supporters never fail to turn up at major events, but it is a different story for the squad, which has given ‘not playing consistently together’ as the excuse to not coming close to any trophies.

Premier League managers have often spoken about the possible inclusion of a winter break, that can give national players a chance to play longer periods together. Also, knowing the physical nature of the intense Premier League matches, players have been seen tired mentally and physically when it comes to the summer and start of major competitions.

However, Lampard has suggested that the squad is feeling the frustration of not having their hands on a single trophy, despite the team being seen as one of the best England sides ever.

According to Sky Sports, Lampard said, “As a group and individually, I’ll hold my hands up and say at World Cups we haven’t performed.”

“It certainly isn’t for the want of trying. But when you look at the end and you go ‘yes, I’ve ticked all those boxes’, the international one, none of us have ticked.”

There have also been experts suggesting that Lampard and Steven Gerrard cannot play together in one team, considering the similar nature of their game. While Lampard believes that is a “myth”, he has acknowledged the opposition, which do not come easy to a well-publicized side like England.

Lampard commented: “Going in and playing big tournaments at 4-4-2 at times, it’s not easy in midfield, when you’re outnumbered, because you’re not getting outnumbered against mugs, you’re outnumbered against top players.”
