Could This Chelsea Legend Return To The Club On A Free Transfer?

Former Chelsea superstar Eden Hazard has been released by Real Madrid on a free transfer upon the expiration of his deal with the club [via Real Madrid Official Website].

Hazard will depart the club officially on June 30, 2023. His time at Los Blancos was mixed at best – however, he did win a slew of trophies during his time there, including the Champions League in 2022.

In Madrid’s official statement regarding Hazard’s release, it reads: “Eden Hazard has been part of our club for four seasons, during which time he has won 8 titles: 1 European Cup, 1 Club World Cup, 1 European Super Cup, 2 La Liga titles, 1 Copa del Rey and 2 Spanish Super Cups.

“Real Madrid would like to express our affection to Eden Hazard and we wish him and his family the best of luck for the next stage of his career.”

What would Eden Hazard add to the Chelsea squad?

At this point, a move for Eden Hazard would make little sense – outside of nostalgia and shirt sales. Chelsea’s squad is already littered with talented wingers and attacking midfielders – the last thing they need is another, especially one who will likely command a hefty wage.

Moreover, at 32 years of age, Chelsea simply have better options at their disposal than the iconic Belgian. He scored just four goals in 54 appearances for Madrid – in a transfer window where Chelsea cannot afford to make mistakes, acquiring Hazard would probably be unwise.

What will Eden Hazard’s next club be?

Currently, it is unclear where the next stage of Hazard’s career will take place. He had been linked with a move to the MLS earlier in the year, but nothing has been mentioned since then.

He could return to his Belgium – he has never played for a senior club team in his native country. Additionally, the club where he made his debut, Lille, may also wish to take a gamble on him.
