Conte Makes Controversial Morata Claim

New Chelsea forward Alvaro Morata has only been at the club for a couple of weeks since completing his apparent £70m move from Real Madrid. The Spaniard has looked fairly impressive during the short while he has appeared during pre-season, giving fans plenty of excitement about the upcoming season.

Coming into the side in order to replace the outgoing Diego Costa, Morata has big boots to fill and a lot of goals to score – not to mention the huge price-tag he has to live up to. With all that pressure, it seems odd that manager Antonio Conte would make a comment about his forward’s fitness levels.

Speaking to The Sun, Conte admitted that Morata is yet to reach the fitness level required by the club – saying the Spanish international ‘needs to improve his fitness quickly’ and may have to sit out Sunday’s Community Shield fixture at Wembley against Arsenal as a result.

“Morata is just starting to train with us.” said Conte via The Sun.

“He has to improve his condition a lot to adapt quickly into our team.”

“He is working well but it has been only five days. Today, he tried to do his best but for sure he has to improve.”

A sly dig from a man who is genuinely not impressed by his new signings fitness levels? Or a hint to further motivate the forward into working even harder, to achieve more. Either way, we should see Morata light up the Premier League next season.
