Conte hails historic Chelsea performance

Chelsea boss Antonio Conte has hailed his sides performance against Atletico Madrid on Wednesday night, saying they played with great personality and desire.

Chelsea became the first English side to win at Atletico Madrid, and did so in emphatic style with a 94th minute winner after going 1-0 down. The Blues now sit top of their group after two games, and many will agree the ‘hardest’ fixture is out of the way.

Atletico took the lead from the spot via an Antoine Griezmann penalty, before Morata levelled the scoring and Michy Batshuayi grabbed the win at the death. The manager was full of praise for his side, and specifically pointed to their ‘personality’ within their performance.

“You can win, but if you win only to defend, to go and counter attack there isn’t the right satisfaction.” Said Conte.

“Instead to come here and to show we are ready to play… it’s very important.”

“We must play always with the same personality, the same desire to play football and to try through the play to deserve to win.”

“The answer tonight was very positive.”

Atletico boss Diego Simeone will have been furious about how his side threw away their lead, but admits Chelsea were the better side.

Simeone said: “Chelsea were the better team. The draw was a good result for us, but at the very end they had the patience to move the ball round very well and scored at the last second.”

“We couldn’t really play our game because our rival was better. They had better intensity, they were better at a tactical level.”

“We were never comfortable. It was a fair victory for Chelsea because they just played better.”
