Conte did right replacing Costa with Morata

Jamie Redknapp says that Chelsea boss Antonio Conte made the right decision by allowing Diego Costa to leave the club, bringing in Alvaro Morata as his replacement.

Costa was prolific during his time at Stamford Bridge, but his relationship with Conte turned sour after the boss supposedly deemed him surplus to requirements at the club. The forward then refused to return to Chelsea for pre-season and has since made a £50m+ move to Atletico Madrid.

According to Jamie Redknapp though, Chelsea have done well to sign Morata – a player he believes has all the qualities of Costa but without the poor attitude.

“I thought that Chelsea replacing Diego Costa with Morata would be one of the biggest gambles of the season,” Redknapp wrote in the Daily Mail.

“Morata may not have the same subtle touches as Kane in his game but he is confounding all his doubters.”

“Having already shown his remarkable heading ability, against Stoke he demonstrated blistering pace and clinical finishing.”

“I read that Antonio Conte thinks Morata is the sort of player he would be happy for his daughter to marry. I can’t imagine him saying the same about Costa!”

“Conte will be able to get the best from Morata without having to deal with the dressing-room distractions Costa might have caused.”

It was a risky move bringing in a forward who was unproven in the Premier League, but Morata certainly looks the part at Chelsea so far this season, and many have favoured him to finish the season as the league’s top scorer.
