Confidence Restored Within Chelsea Squad – Cahill

The summer at Chelsea Football Club was dominated with just one and only one story – the return of Jose Mourinho. The Portugese boss had ended his tumultuous tenure at Real Madrid and was heading to a place he called ‘home’. Understandably, there was certain excitement among the Chelsea fans to see the ‘Special One’ back at the helm.

Much was expected from Mourinho and his Chelsea team this season, who were being reckoned as early season title contenders, as many feared that Mourinho will again be able to forge a fearsome partnership with Chelsea, very similar to the way he did the first time he was in charge.

However, things have not gone the way he would have ideally wanted them to. After a decent start to the season, the club from London hit a minor bump which followed a drop in form and which saw them reduced to back-to-back defeats, first in the league to Everton and then to FC Basel in the UEFA Champions League. These rose fears that it will not be as easy for Chelsea as it was being made initially.

Since that drop in results, Chelsea have done some damage limitation and have notched two victories on the bounce against Fulham and Swindon Town respectively. That has gone some way in restoring calm at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea’s English defender Gary Cahill has revealed that he is expecting his team to kick on from now and to make up ground on league leaders Arsenal.

Speaking before the weekend, Sky Sports report him as saying, “It was a tough week, especially when we lost back to back,”

“But we’ve responded really well. Two wins, two clean sheets. Happy days at the minute.”

Cahill looks determined to maintain this streak now, and played a massive part this weekend in the crucial London derby against Tottenham where with the help of a resurgent Juan Mata they engineered a rousing second half performance where Mata had a disallowed goal but went on to set up John Terry for the equaliser in the 1-1 draw where Chelsea almost went on to win on the back of the excellent 2nd half display from the magic Mata and the aggressive Torres who actually got sent off for his efforts not that you could really crticize him for his dedication to the cause.
