Cole No Longer Mourinho’s First Choice But Could Still Make Plane For Brazil

Ashley Cole will have a tough time making England’s squad for the World Cup in Brazil. Despite being fit to play, the Englishman was benched and had to watch the FA Game against City as a substitute for Cesar Azpilicueta. The Spaniard who is currently played out off position was still Mourinho’s first choice despite Cole’s impressive resume.

According to TEAMtalk, Chelsea’s boss is keen on offering the 33 year old left-back a new contract at the end of the year. The Blues will probably provide Cole with a one year deal which may be a deal breaker for the English international who insists he still has a lot to offer.

Chelsea’s player was linked to a possible transfer during the summer but decided to continue at Stamford Bridge. His choice might have not been the best he ever made considering how strong the competition is for a spot in England’s national team. With Luke Shaw, Leighton Baines and Kieran Gibbs performing on a regular basis, Cole will surely miss out on his ticket to Brazil.

What is even worse for Chelsea’s left-back is the fact that Mourinho does not seem too interested in whether or not his player will lose his last chance to represent his country on an international level .When asked about Cole’s chances to make the Blues’ first eleven, the Portuguese manager said he is quite happy with the way Azpilicueta is performing.

Mourinho also pointed out that Cole might still have a chance as far as the World Cup goes. Chelsea’s manager said that selections are not always made based on regularity and recent performances and results. With that in mind, the Blues’ defender could be called to represent his country even if he will make only a few sporadic appearances until the end of the season and the fact that Cole was England’s best player at the last major tournament – the Euro’s – must give him a good chance to make the plane based on his excellent international reputation.
