Chilwell V Reguilon: Who Would Be A Better Signing For Chelsea? We Compare 4 Stats

Back in June, we ran a piece comparing Leicester’s Ben Chilwell to Ajax’s Nicolas Tagliafico, but with Sevilla’s Sergio Reguilon having been pushed up the list of names, we thought it would be a good idea to compare the Spaniard with Frank Lampard’s number one left-back target.

Reports in recent days have suggested that the Blues have achieved a breakthrough in their negotiations to sign Chilwell, but the news was met with some resistance from fans on social media.

Some supporters feel that there is better value in the transfer market than paying a hefty fee for Chilwell, with many citing the example of Reguilon. Reports in Spain suggest that he could be available for as little as £25m.

So how do the two fullbacks measure up against each other? Press the next page as we look at four key stats that may offer an answer.

Crossing

This is a no contest. Chilwell has a very disappointing cross completion rate compared to other fullbacks. Last season in the Premier League, he completed just 18% of his crosses into the box.

Compare that to Reguilon who, in La Liga last campaign, completed 28% of his cross attempts. To put this into context, 30% is seen as the gold standard in terms of success percentage when it comes to fullbacks.

Goals and Assists

Chilwell and Reguilon are pretty well matched in this area. Both managed six-goal contributions during their league campaigns. The England international managed to score three goals and provide three assists.

The Spaniard, meanwhile, scored two but contributed four assists. Neither possess spectacular numbers but they do offer a decent threat going forward.

Aerial Duels

Defending crosses at the far post, as well as long diagonal balls, means a modern fullback needs to have the wits about them in the air. In terms of aerial ability, Chilwell is definitely stronger.

Despite being shorter than Reguilon, the Leicester star won 60% of his aerial duels in the Premier League last campaign, compared to the Real Madrid defender who managed to win just 50% for Sevilla.

Ground Duels

Battling one-on-one with opposing wingers is also an important part of being a fullback. On this metric, Reguilon is marginally better than Chilwell, having won 54% of his duels against opponents in La Liga.

The England fullback only managed to win 45%, which is something he will need to improve upon, especially at Chelsea, where Frank Lampard’s system could leave him exposed at times.

In summary, then, there is a case to be made to say Reguilon is slightly the better player, and with that being the case, the Blues should seriously consider him as a viable alternative to Chilwell.
