Chelsea’s Smart Loan System Brings The Club Real Rewards

A lot gets written about Chelsea’s failure to give young players a chance; however, with it emerging over the last few days that we have brought in over £100m in transfer fees you have to question as to whether this logic is actually a bad one.

I truly believe that if you are good enough you stand out like a sore thumb and will automatically get into the team. John Terry is living proof of this and if the young players association with Chelsea ensures that they get international recognition and put in the shop window for other clubs to spend millions on, then surely Chelsea are getting it right and not wrong? It is the best of both worlds and arguably a complete masterstroke by Abramovich and his team.

In this era of financial fair play the club are merely exploring all areas, other than commercial deals in order to ensure the club stays at the top and remains competitive. We have to be honest that we don’t generate the type of match day revenues that United and Arsenal get, therefore we have to box a little clever when it comes to generating transfer funds and it appears the club have struck gold with this policy.

I think if we take Nathan Ake as an example that it is important that we start to loan our youngsters to Premier League clubs, as opposed to clubs abroad. Ake’s spells at Watford and then Bournemouth meant the club could command a £20m fee and we should be looking to send the likes of Loftus-Cheek, Brown and Baker out on loan next season to see if they can cut it at this level – to either be good for Chelsea – or to secure a permanent move away.

I know many fans might think it is wrong to praise this move, as the romanticism of them believe that you should bring through your own players to the 1st team. Personally I agree and if they are good enough they will get in, but this is the best option to send them on loan to enable us to make a better decision on their abilities. If they are not good enough then we cash in. It is a smart move; hell, Barcelona has been doing it for years.
