Chelsea’s pursuit of Premier League striker is pointless, they need a new approach

Chelsea’s quest to sign a new striker to replace the ousted Diego Costa at Stamford Bridge is proving to be incredibly problematic for Antonio Conte’s side, as they missed out on the services of Romelu Lukaku and have struggled to make progress elsewhere.

A wealth of top-class strikers have been linked with a move to West London this summer, including Borussia Dortmund’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Torino’s Andrea Belotti, but it seems the Blues are setting their sights even higher- and setting themselves up for disappointment as a result.

According to Sky Sports, Chelsea hold ‘strong and serious’ interest in the services of Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero but it’s clear the Citizens won’t sanction a sale, particularly to a Premier League rival, as Pep Guardiola still has a place for the Argentine.

Signed in 2011 from Atletico Madrid, Aguero has been a huge part of Manchester City’s meteoric rise in English football during the past decade and has secured legendary status at the club, with the possibility he’ll become the Citizens’ all-time leading scorer this season.

Chelsea’s interest in Aguero, who’s been arguably the best striker in the Premier League this decade, is hardly surprising but the Blues are unfortunately just setting themselves up for further disappointment as there is no chance City will approve a sale.

Even chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak stated the Argentine ace was going nowhere, as when asked if Aguero would remain at the Etihad Stadium he responded:

“Absolutely. There’s never been a doubt about that. I’ve read a lot of the speculation on this and it’s ridiculous.”

“Sergio Aguero is one of the best players in the world. We are a team that aspires to win every competition we compete in. Having Sergio Aguero as part of the squad is an absolute must. It has never been in doubt.”

Question marks on Aguero’s position at City has been under speculation ever since Gabriel Jesus arrived from South America in January but the Brazilian ace is still a very raw talent and will need support next season, which Aguero will provide.

Since City’s takeover in 2008, the Citizens have never sold a player that hasn’t been on their terms and that’s unlikely to change now- especially as Guardiola’s side will be aiming to topple Chelsea from the summit of the Premier League.
