Chelsea’s MVP: Find Out Who Comes Out On Top As We Rank EVERY Player’s Performance This Season

With the break for the World Cup, we felt it is the perfect time to rank every Chelsea player’s performance this campaign.

To make it fair, we have used WhoScored‘s rating system, and we haven’t included the likes of N’Golo Kante, Wesley Fofana or anyone else who has played fewer than five matches.

This ranking will only look at their displays in the Premier League and we will go through the first team squad until we get to the top performer, or the ‘Most Valuable Player’.

Press the next page to find out who the club’s MVP is so far this season.

20) Christian Pulisic – 6.25

The American international has arguably not had the game time he would have liked but the fact that he continues to be used sparingly despite a change in manager sums up the player’s poor performances.

19) Armando Broja – 6.26

There have been flashes of what the Albanian can bring to the party with his physicality and speed but he doesn’t look ready to be a regular starter for the Blues.

18) Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – 6.32

The 33-year-old started well at his new club, with three goals in his first five matches but he hasn’t scored in any competition for over a month. Considering he was Tuchel’s signing, it will be interesting to see how long he lasts at Stamford Bridge.

17) Hakim Ziyech – 6.38

There will be some fans that will say that the Moroccan hasn’t had a fair shake at Stamford Bridge, but his lack of pace and the fact that he is so one-footed makes him predictable. A departure in January is almost certain.

16) Mateo Kovacic – 6.39

Based on his performance versus Newcastle, the Croatian’s ranking on this list may not be surprising to some but, overall, he has had a decent season, so it is interesting that WhoScored have marked his displays so low.

15) Edouard Mendy – 6.50

The Senegalese international’s form has fallen off a cliff in recent months. Whether that is down to confidence or due to his contract dispute, it isn’t known but, when Kepa is back fit after the World Cup, Mendy is likely to return to the bench.

14) Ben Chilwell – 6.51

Even before the left-back picked up his thigh injury, he was in and out the starting lineup due to his inconsistency but fans will raise an eyebrow about the fact that his performances are rated below Marc Cucurella’s.

13) Ruben Loftus-Cheek – 6.53

The midfielder’s inconsistency can absolutely infuriate supporters. In some matches, Loftus-Cheek looks like a really good option in midfield or even at wingback but, on other days, he looks completely disinterested. At 26 years of age, he doesn’t have the excuse anymore either that he is just a young player.

12) Conor Gallagher – 6.53

It’s been a mixed bag since the midfielder returned from his loan spell at Crystal Palace in the summer. He was sent off against Leicester but he also scored a sublime last-gasp winner against Palace. The fact that Gallagher is in England’s World Cup squad will also puzzle many.

11) Jorginho – 6.55

Like Kovacic, the Italian was very poor versus Newcastle, and his lack of pace and physicality make him a liability when Chelsea are not dominating possession. Based on his efforts this season, he may not be handed a new contract. A summer exit is looking increasingly likely.

10) Trevoh Chalobah – 6.56

The defender has stood up while many others have struggled at the start of this season, and for that reason, it is hard to criticise him, despite the fact that, when everyone is fit, he doesn’t possess the quality to be a regular starter.

9) Marc Cucurella – 6.58

The Spaniard’s ranking here will shock many but it’s important to point out that his WhoScored rating isn’t exactly high. It just demonstrates how poorly the whole squad have been performing this campaign. Cucurella will be hoping to show what he is truly capable of after the World Cup.

8) Kai Havertz – 6.66

The German’s performance against Arsenal a couple of weeks ago was pretty appalling and, while he does have his moments, he will just throw one in occasionally which makes you truly question whether he will ever realise his full potential. Like most of the forwards in the Blues squad, he is flattering to deceive.

7) Raheem Sterling – 6.68

After a very bright start to his Chelsea career, the 27-year-old’s form has dropped alarmingly. His confidence looks shot and it will be hoped that a strong World Cup for England will restore his performance levels.

6) Cesar Azpilicueta – 6.75

Like with Cucurella, the captain’s placement on this list is less to do with his own performances and more to do with the dreadful displays of others. At 32 years of age, Azpilicueta is regressing as a player, and he may have to be satisfied with a bit part role when Fofana and James return to fitness next month.

5) Kalidou Koulibaly – 6.79

Like Sterling, the centre-back started off pretty brightly, with his excellent goal versus Tottenham. However, Koulibaly hasn’t looked comfortable on the left side of a back three. His distribution is rather poor and his reluctance to get forward means Potter can’t use him to play out from the back.

4) Mason Mount – 6.83

Lots of fans have been hammering the midfielder but he has more goal contributions (two goals and six assists) than anyone else in the first-team squad this campaign. There are plenty of other players to blame for Chelsea’s current performances so it’s time to lay off Mount.

3) Thiago Silva – 7.03

The Brazilian has been his usual self. It’s remarkable that, at 38 years of age, he can maintain such a consistent level of performance. Silva’s current deal does expire at the end of the season and it remains to be seen whether he is open to remaining at Stamford Bridge for another year. Based on the current evidence, he is still very much a Premier League standard defender.

2) Reece James – 7.11

Simply an outstanding player, not much more needs to be said. The Blues miss him badly when he isn’t in the team, and Potter will be glad to have him back available after the World Cup.

1 – MVP) Kepa Arrizabalaga – 7.27

It isn’t really a good sign for a team when the goalkeeper is rated as the best player but Kepa does deserve the recognition. He has an 80% save ratio, which is ranked as the fourth-best in the Premier League. In contrast, Mendy’s is 67.6%. There is no doubt who will be in goal when Chelsea face Bournemouth next month.
