Chelsea’s first summer signing doesn’t solve any of their big issues

Chelsea have been relatively quiet on the transfer market thus far but a major addition seems to be just around the corner, with Sky Sports amongst a number of outlets reporting the Blues have agreed a £33.4m deal to sign Antonio Rudiger from Roma.

The German defender will provide greater depth to Chelsea’s defensive ranks, which have been depleted this summer by the departures of veteran defender John Terry and young asset Nathan Ake- the latter of whom sealed a permanent move to Bournemouth earlier this week.

Rudiger gives Conte further options to consider at the back and provides competition to the trio of Cesar Azpilicueta, David Luiz and Gary Cahill, whilst his addition could see Spaniard Azpilicueta revert to his more familiar position at wing-back.

Whilst it’s a significant deal for Chelsea that improves their squad, it isn’t a signing that solves one of the biggest issues that the Blues have- as the areas crying out for reinforcements are central midfield and in attack.

The likely loss of Nemanja Matic to Manchester United leaves Chelsea’s central midfield options looking very bare, with N’Golo Kante needing a top-class partner, and even the possible addition of Tiemoue Bakayoko from Monaco won’t provide the Blues with the depth they need.

The issue is the same in attack, with Diego Costa being informed he’s surplus to requirements and youngster Michy Batshuayi also linked with an exit following a difficult debut season in English football, which means the Blues could be without a recognised first-team striker.

Once again, the Blues have been linked with big names in this area and are pursuing a club-record deal for Romelu Lukaku but the Everton striker won’t fix all of Antonio Conte’s issues, as signings need to be made to increase the club’s depth.

Chelsea were fortunate not to be stretched by injuries or European involvement last season but they won’t benefit from the same luck this season and entering the campaign with a limited squad could lead to some big issues.

With the departures likely to take place at Stamford Bridge this summer, Chelsea are looking like they need at least two additions in midfield and attack- and further options may be required for their wing-back roles.

In reality, a £33m-odd deal for Rudiger means Chelsea are spending a vast amount of cash in an area that isn’t a priority- which means the Blues will have decreased funds to strengthen their side elsewhere, although sales of the likes of Matic could bolster their kitty.
