Chelsea With Narrow Win But Finish As Group Winners

The fans looked pretty disappointed even though their team won against Romanian side, Steaua on Wednesday night. The Blues failed to impress and reminded supporters that Chelsea is not the team everyone expected it to be at this particular point of the season. The defense was at times lost against one of the weakest attacks in the Champions League. It seems that losing against Stoke was not an accident and that this problem will persist if the Portuguese manager does not take any action.

The game started with Chelsea pushing their adversaries into their own half. The first 5 minutes saw Steaua struggling to get the ball. Just 9 minutes into the game and the Blues already had a bunch of chances not to mention the 6 corner kicks which got the Romanian side defending their goal with almost the entire team.

With 10 minutes gone, Demba Ba pressured Georgievski into scoring an own goal. Oscar was the one with the assist that would have made it to Chelsea’s striker if not for Steaua’s player’s deflection. Just 3 minutes after that Iancu found himself alone against Schwarzer. Fortunately for the London team, the Romanian failed to find the target even though he had all the time in the world to score.

The Blues had a 71% possession rate through 35 minutes in the game. It was hard to keep tabs on how many shots and corner kicks they managed to waste. Even so, fans looked pretty unhappy with Chelsea’s lack of efficiency in front of goal.

The second half started pretty much the same as the first. Chelsea continued to dominate but Steaua managed to defend all their attacks. Ramires and Schurrle came on to liven up the game a bit. Up until the 65th minute Hazard was the only one managing to make a difference. Unfortunately for the fans nothing really changed. De Bruyne also got some time on the pitch and did manage a couple of eye-catching runs but nothing particularly noteworthy. The stands looked pretty empty as the final whistle of the game came. Steaua finally got a corner with 2 minutes to go but failed to make something of it. The game ended in a strange silence which gave the impression you were watching a training match but ultimately it finished as a 1-0 win for Chelsea and JOB DONE as they qualified for the knockout phase of the Champions League as group winners.
