Chelsea Winter Transfer Roundup and Mourinho’s Summer Transfer Plans

According to ESPN, Jose Mourinho has confirmed his intentions of signing a star striker this summer, after the Portuguese boss was unable to do so in the recently concluded January transfer window that saw the club sign several players.

Chelsea secured the signatures of Nemanja Matic, Mohamed Salah and Kurt Zouma spending €52 million in the January window making them the biggest spenders, but the surprise of the window remained their reluctance to sign a striker. With Fernando Torres injured once again, the club have to rely on Demba Ba and Samuel Eto’o to score the goals from the striker position. The club were linked with several players like Monaco’s Radamel Falcao and Hulk, but were not able to get deals through this winter.

Chelsea did move Michael Essien to AC Milan on a permanent deal, Gael Kakuta has joined Lazio on loan for the rest of the season and Ryan Bertrand has joined Aston Villa on loan for the rest of the season plus they sold Kevin De Bruyne to Wolfsburg and of course Manchester United broke their transfer record when they signed Juan Mata for £37million from the Blues. Thanks to the players moving out Chelsea actually made a net profit in the winter transfer window.

Eden Hazard has been one of the club’s best players this season, and will be helped by Matic and Salah through the second half of the campaign but Zouma will remain in France until the summer. With the UEFA Champions League knockout phase returning to the stage, Chelsea will have an increase in the number of fixtures, and will face a tough time without an additional striker but the depth of their squad should see them manage to score the goals they will need to advance.
