Chelsea Waiting In The Wings To Sign Belgian Marksman On Free Transfer

Chelsea are still interested in signing Napoli forward Dries Mertens, according to Il Mattino. The Italian newspaper claims the Blues, Atletico Madrid and Inter Milan are keeping a watchful eye on contract negotiations.

The Belgian has just three months remaining on his current deal at the San Paolo, and it is believed that there are some obstacles to the player staying in Italy.

This has reportedly led to Mertens signalling to other clubs that he could be interested in joining them if they meet his €6m (£5.35m) a season contract demands.

Such a figure would not be a problem for Chelsea, who failed in their attempt to lure the 32-year-old to Stamford Bridge in the January transfer window.

Mertens could well be available on a free transfer in a few months time, but Il Mattino do report that Napoli are still confident that a deal can be reached with the player. Interested clubs will, though, continue to monitor the striker’s situation.
