Chelsea V Liverpool: The Five Most Memorable Games Between The Two Sides

There have been many memorable matches between Chelsea and Liverpool over the years; particularly since the beginning of the Roman Abramovich era.

The rivalry has been stoked by some controversial incidents, including the ‘ghost’ goal and Steven Gerrard’s slip.

Ahead of the FA Cup tie tomorrow, we take a look at the best games that have been played between the two teams.

Press the “next page” as we trawl through the archives for the five most memorable matches between Chelsea and Liverpool.

Chelsea 2 – 1 Liverpool – 2004

Jesper Gronkjaer’s winner not only secured the Blues a top-four finish and a spot in the Champions League, it is also believed to have been crucial in Roman Abramovich buying the club.

The Russian had already decided to purchase a Premier League team but the Blues’ qualification for Europe reportedly sealed the deal.

Liverpool 2 – 3 Chelsea – 2005

The League Cup final in 2005 was the beginning of the vast trophy haul that Chelsea would accrue over the forthcoming years.

Steven Gerrard’s own goal proved a vital turning point, with the Blues scoring two goals in extra time and sealing their first cup under Jose Mourinho’s stewardship. The Portuguese also rubbed salt into the wounds of his opponents by shushing Liverpool’s supporters.

Chelsea 3-2 Liverpool (4-3 on Aggregate) – 2008

After a 1-1 draw in the first leg of the Champions League semi-final, Didier Drogba scored the opener at Stamford Bridge before Reds striker Fernando Torres scored to level the tie back up.

It went to extra time where a penalty from Frank Lampard and another strike from Drogba sealed Chelsea’s progress to the final in Moscow.

Chelsea 4-4 Liverpool (7-5 on Aggregate) – 2009

With the Reds 3-1 down from the first leg, the Merseysiders decided to go hell for leather in the second match at Stamford Bridge. The away side found themselves 2-0 up in the first half, before being pegged back by three goals from the Blues in the second.

However, Lucas Leiva and Dirk Kuyt then remarkably put Liverpool 4-3 up on the night before Lampard levelled things again to settle the nerves.

Liverpool 0-2 Chelsea – 2014

Although the ‘ghost’ goal in 2005 would be a hard one to forget, Chelsea supporters now have a far happier memory from a trip to Anfield.

Steven Gerrard’s slip when in possession allowed Demba Ba to score. With the Reds pressing for the equaliser, Willian sealed a 2-0 win which played a crucial role in Manchester City winning the title ahead of their fierce rivals.
