Chelsea Turn Down Atletico’s Advances For Young Goalie

Belgian goalkeeper, Thibaut Courtois, joined Chelsea in 2011, and was immediately loaned out on a season long loan to Spanish side Atletico Madrid. He enjoyed his debut season at the Vicente Calderon. So much so, that Atletico managed to bring him back to Spain again for this season.

He is enjoying yet another stellar season in between the sticks for Atletico, and there are calls from sections of the club’s fans suggesting that they sign the youngster on a permanent basis from Chelsea.

Chelsea are interested in Atletico Madrid’s mercurial striker Radamel Falcao. The Colombian is currently heavily linked with a summer move to Stamford Bridge, as the Blues look to bolster their attack ahead of next season, having run out of patience with misfiring striker Fernando Torres. A massive £52 million bid for Falcao is being mooted.

Atletico are resolved to lose their prized asset in the summer, and Chelsea are the leading contenders for the 27-year old. It has been reported lately that Atletico are possibly eyeing a summer swap, wherein they would sell Falcao to Chelsea in a player plus cash deal which will see Courtois go the other way and join Atletico on a permanent basis.

However, Atletico’s hopes of implementing this deal have been scuppered by Chelsea, who according to the Daily Star, have made it clear that they see him as current Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech’s long-term replacement, hence they will not use him as a makeweight in a possible deal for Falcao, though they are open to the prospect of letting Courtois join Atletico for a third season on loan next season.

To further dampen Atletico’s interest in permanently signing Courtois, Chelsea have slapped a massive £17 million price tag on the young shot stopper – a valuation which Athletico will not be willing to meet for a 21-year old. Atletico do of course have Joel on their books a young Spanish goalkeeper who is on loan with Wigan in the Premier League and he has just broken into the first team leading Wigan to 2 straight wins against Everton and Newcastle.

First things first – Do you see Falcao joining Chelsea in the summer? If yes, will Athletico use the money earned from Falcao’s sale in signing Courtois permanently or will they stick with their own young keeper?
