“One To Keep An Eye On” – Reliable Journalist Says Chelsea Are Plotting Move For £59M Rated Playmaker

Chelsea are interested in signing RB Leipzig attacking midfielder Xavi Simons, according to The Telegraph reporter Matt Law.

Speaking on the London Is Blue podcast, Law said that Enzo Maresca’s side are fans of the the Netherlands international:

“One to keep an eye on – Xavi Simons, who might leave. He’s one that I know Chelsea had a little look at.”

Simons only joined Leipzig on a permanent basis from Paris Saint-Germain for an initial €50m (£42m) in January but he only signed a two-and-a-half-year contract, which suggested that his new team were hoping to buy before quickly selling him on for a quick profit.

How much would Chelsea have to pay for Simons?

It is believed that Leipzig have slapped a €70m (£59m) price tag on the Dutchman, which is not a small sum, especially as many in Germany have questioned his mentality and attitude.

Another factor to consider is that Chelsea may not have a lot of competition for Simons. Liverpool were interested up until recently but they have recently ended their pursuit to focus on Florian Wirtz.

Manchester City and Manchester United have turned their attention elsewhere as well, with the former hoping to wrap up a deal for Lyon’s Rayan Cherki, while the latter have already signed Matheus Cunha from Wolves.

Is there a risk of repeating the mistake they made with Nkunku?

Supporters may be concerned that there are similarities between Simons and Christopher Nkunku. The Frenchman was, of course, signed from Leipzig and he plays in a similar position.

The cost of signing Simons would actually be slightly higher and he hasn’t had a standout season, unlike the one that Nkunku had prior to his arrival at Stamford Bridge.

There are some upsides to recruiting the 22-year-old. He is still very young and has room to develop. Furthermore, the playmaker is capable of playing in multiple positions – right across the front three or as a No.10.
