Ex-Chelsea defender William Gallas thinks his former club would be signing a “world-class” player if they manage to bring in Victor Osimhen before the end of the month.
The Blues are holding talks with Napoli about the Nigerian international and, speaking to Genting Casino, Gallas said that Enzo Maresca’s side “should do everything” in their power to secure the forward’s services:
“The links to Napoli’s Victor Osimhen aren’t going away. For me, he is exactly the level of player Chelsea should be looking to bring in.”
“If they can sign Osimhen, then I would feel a lot more confident about the club’s chances of qualifying for the top four because he is a world-class player. Chelsea need a striker like him if they want to compete. They should do everything that they can to get him.”
What is the current situation with Chelsea and Osimhen?
It is believed that the 25-year-old would be open to a switch to Stamford Bridge but he only wants a permanent transfer or a loan deal with an obligation to buy.
Osimhen isn’t willing to take a pay cut either, meaning Chelsea may have to break their current wage structure in order to sign him.
Lukaku could be crucial in negotiations
Napoli are desperate to recruit Romelu Lukaku, as he is a player that Antonio Conte has requested. It means the Belgian can be used as a potential bargaining chip.
Even so, Chelsea are keen to get as much as they can for the striker. There is a £37m release clause in his contract but Napoli are only willing to pay £26m at the moment.
For that reason, a part-exchange deal (which includes Osimhen) may be difficult to finalise, as Napoli will need to budge on their valuation of Lukaku first.
