Romano Claims 24 Year Old Will “Leave” Chelsea Despite Pochettino Denials

Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah is “expected to leave” Stamford Bridge when the transfer window reopens in January, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.

While manager Mauricio Pochettino has denied that the 24-year-old has been frozen out following his failed £25m move to Nottingham Forest on deadline day, Romano says there is still a good chance that the player will be sold in the New Year:

Chalobah has already ruled out joining Forest, but it will be interesting to see whether Bayern do come back in for the centre-back. The only reason the deal collapsed in the summer was because the Bundesliga champions didn’t have enough time to complete the deal before the window shut.

As Romano mentions, Chalobah was “keen” on moving to Germany, so there is a strong possibility that this transfer could be revived.

What has Pochettino said about Chalobah’s future?

Following reports in the British media that the defender had been frozen out by the club after rejecting a move to Forest, Pochettino said:

“The players that are here if they deserve will have the opportunities to play but they need to be better than the others in their position.”

Why is Chalobah keen to leave Chelsea?

There is a lot of competition for places in the centre of defence, especially after Axel Disasi was signed from Monaco at the start of last month.

With Thiago Silva, Levi Colwill, Benoit Badiashile and Wesley Fofana also part of the first-team squad, Chalobah is effectively sixth-choice centre-half when everyone is fit.
