Chelsea defender Thiago Silva is “not likely to be retained” by the club when his contract expires next summer, according to The Athletic‘s David Ornstein.
The trusted journalist has seemingly confirmed that the 39-year-old will be leaving Stamford Bridge after four years with the Blues. Fans on X are understandably disappointed that Silva will not renew his current deal, although some feel it is the right time for him to go:

At his age I don’t have a problem with us not retaining Silva, he has been excellent for us and am so happy he won trophies especially the UCL with us. It would be a good farewell with no bad blood like the others. He’s a legend and should be given a position upstairs when he…

Silva could be looking to return to his first club
The centre-back flirted with the idea of joining Fluminense last summer, and there has always been a feeling that he would sign for his boyhood team before he hung up his boots.
With Chelsea in transition, and looking unlikely to win major trophies in the near future, Silva may feel that next year is the right time to go back to Brazil. He will turn 40 at the start of next season so his career at the top level is drawing to a close.
Chelsea need an experienced player to replace Silva if he leaves
Mauricio Pochettino’s first-team squad already lacks experienced heads, and the departure of Silva would exacerbate the issue even further.
You would hope that Chelsea’s co-sporting directors Lawrence Stewart and Paul Winstanley are smart enough to recognise they need to find a replacement for Silva who has the same ability, character and reputation.
