Chelsea are weighing up a move for Feyenoord striker Santiago Gimenez, according to ESPN.

While Napoli’s Victor Osimhen and Brentford’s Ivan Toney remain the “preferred options”, the website claims that Gimenez is also “under consideration”.

The Mexican international has been in outstanding form for Feyenoord this season, racking up 20 goals in 20 appearances in all competitions.

Gimenez has carried on from where he left off last campaign, when he scored 15 times to help Feyenoord win the Eredivisie title for the first time in six years.

How much would Gimenez cost?

It has been reported that the 22-year-old would cost around €50m (£43m), which is substantially less than either Osimhen or Toney.

Osimhen is expected to have a €130m (£111.6m) release clause in his new contract, while Brentford are likely to demand £80m if a club makes an approach for Toney during the January transfer window.

Would Chelsea have rivals for the Mexican’s signature?

Both Arsenal and Tottenham were linked with Gimenez (along with Inter Milan and Real Madrid) in the French press last month. West Ham are also said to have scouted the forward extensively since the beginning of the season.

There is debate over whether Feyenoord would be willing to sell their star player midway through the campaign but, if Chelsea do meet his reported asking price, there is a good chance that the Eredivisie champions would sell.

Some may have doubts over whether Gimenez has the requisite experience to play in the Premier League. In the Champions League this season, he scored in only one group stage match (a brace in a 3-1 win over Lazio back in October), whilst drawing blanks in his three other appearances.

Like with Nicolas Jackson, the Blues would be taking a chance on signing a young player who has yet to prove himself at the highest level.
