Chelsea And Tottenham Set To Battle For £70m Striker In January Who Almost Joined The Blues In 2024

Chelsea and Tottenham are both reportedly interested in signing the same striker, who should be available for around £70m.

The Blues have had mixed results so far this season. They sit seventh in the Premier League table, having won five of their opening ten games. They come off an impressive 1-0 win against Tottenham, in which Enzo Maresca‘s side were able to dominate.

Chelsea next face Qarabag in the Champions League, before welcoming Wolves on Monday night football ahead of the November international break.

There was a lot of optimism surrounding Chelsea in the summer after they added Joao Pedro and Liam Delap up front. However, Delap has had injury problems, and Pedro has been very inconsistent, so reports have suggested the Blues could look to the transfer market for a new striker in January.

Chelsea and Spurs set to battle for Samu

Samu Aghehowa was linked with a move to Stamford Bridge in the summer of 2024, after a deal of around £35m was agreed between Chelsea and Atletico Madrid. However, the move collapsed after he suffered an ankle injury, and Chelsea were forced to look elsewhere, and Samu moved to Porto instead.

But, it now seems that the Blues could be in for the 21-year-old Spaniard again, as Portuguese outlet Corriere da Manha are reporting that both Chelsea and rivals Tottenham are interested in signing Samu in the January transfer window.

It is also understood that Porto are willing to sell him this winter, as they are in need of a financial boost, it has been said that the Portuguese club will be willing to accept an offer pf £70m. That is a lot, however, the 21-year-old has already shown he’s an excellent goal scorer, plus, with his age, he could develop into one of the world’s best.

Samu joined Porto in 2024 after his move to Chelsea collapsed, and since then, he has been simply incredible. The striker has scored 36 goals in 57 games, and has a blend of pace and power, not too dissimilar to Chelsea legend Didier Drogba.

What would happen to Pedro and Delap?

It would be a statement signing by the Blues if they were to add Samu, but would beg the question, what would happen to Pedro and Delap. Well, starting with Pedro, he doesn’t have to play as a striker, he can play as a number 10, or even wide too.

That means that the Brazilian would still likely get into Maresca’s team, just moving around several positions. As for Delap, he would likely remain as the second choice striker, something that is very necessary considering that he Blues are fighting in the Premier League, Champions League, and will want a good go in both the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup. Despite their strong depth in attack, Aghehowa would still remain a wise signing for the Blues.
