Fabrizio Romano has played down speculation that Chelsea are interested in signing Real Madrid forward Rodrygo.
The Brazilian international has been the subject of plenty of speculation in recent days, with it being suggested that he could leave the Bernabeu during the January transfer window. However, speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano said the Blues have not made an approach:
“From Brazil, they mentioned Chelsea as a possible solution for Rodrygo, but at the moment, what I’m getting from Chelsea sources is very clear; Chelsea are not in negotiations with Rodrygo, and are not in talks with Rodrygo’s camp or Real Madrid.”
Since Xabi Alonso’s appointment as Real Madrid head coach last summer, Rodrygo has not been given many starting opportunities.
The 24-year-old was left on the bench for the majority of the Club World Cup, while he has only made the first eleven four times this season in all competitions.
Rodrgyo is set to attract plenty of suitors
Even if Chelsea don’t make an approach for the player, he will be in high demand if he decides to leave Real in the New Year.
Back in August, Manchester City were heavily linked with Rodrygo, while the likes of Arsenal, Liverpool and Tottenham have also been credited with an interest over the past few months.
Chelsea would have had to pay a sizeable sum
Rodrygo is very much still in the prime of his career, and with two and a half years remaining on his contract, Real would not let him go on the cheap.
A fee of around €100m (£88m) would probably be required to tempt the Spanish giants into selling the Brazilian. You can’t see the Blues spending that much when Enzo Maresca already has plenty of other wingers at his disposal.
