Chelsea Renew Interest In £64.5m Robert Sanchez Replacement Amid Man United Interest

Chelsea have reportedly renewed their interest in Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa who is also wanted by Manchester United.

The Blues are set to sign a goalkeeper this summer to replace Robert Sanchez, whose season has been plagued by mistakes and inconsistent form.

Enzo Maresca will be hoping that he can guide his side to a top-five finish this season to land a spot in the Champions League next season. They currently sit sixth in the league, two points away from Newcastle in fifth after a 2-1 win over Fulham last time out.

However, the goalkeeper spot remains in contention as Sanchez has been poor this season, with many reports suggesting that the Blues will add a new keeper in the summer transfer window.

According to TeamTalk, they want to sign Porto keeper Diogo Costa. The report says that Chelsea made a move for Costa in May 2024, but it didn’t amount to anything, and they are expected to renew their interest in him this summer.

Costa has been impressive this season, making 48 appearances. He’s conceded just 44 goals for Porto and kept 19 clean sheets, the sort of numbers that could significantly help the Blues at the back.

In contrast, Sanchez has made 30 appearances, conceding 32 goals but keeping just seven clean sheets for Maresca’s side this season.

Chelsea face Premier League competition to sign Costa

The Blues aren’t the only Premier League team that want to sign the Portugal international, as Man United have been heavily linked to Costa in recent weeks due to the poor showings from Andre Onana.

Plus it has now been reported that Man City want to sign the 25-year-old this summer as their long-term replacement for Ederson, whose contract at the Etihad expires in June 2026.

Costa has a £64.5m release clause, and considering the level of interest in him, it could be a case of who pays it first to get him into the building. Chelsea will have to act fast.
