Chelsea may consider making a bid for Brighton goalkeeper Robert Sanchez before the transfer window closes, according to The Athletic’s Andy Naylor.

Writing in a Q&A, the journalist suggested that a move to Stamford Bridge was the likeliest outcome for the Spanish international, who could link up with his former goalkeeping coach:

“Sanchez had a strong bond with Ben Roberts at Brighton, so Stamford Bridge is an obvious possibility for a reunion with Brighton’s former goalkeeper coach. Chelsea need another keeper to compete with Kepa Arrizabalaga after Edouard Mendy’s departure to Al Ahli.”

As Naylor points out, the Blues are in the market for another goalkeeper, but whether they will be prepared to pay the sort of fee that Brighton are demanding for Sanchez, it’s hard to know.

When the 25-year-old was linked with a move for Manchester United earlier this month, it was reported that the Seagulls wanted around £30m. You can’t see Mauricio Pochettino’s side being willing to spend that sum on someone who may not be a guaranteed starter.

Chelsea could wait until later in the window to get Sanchez

The Spaniard is currently third choice on the south coast, with Brighton having recruited Bart Verbruggen from Anderlecht as their new number one, with Jason Steele as the backup.

If no other team comes in to buy Sanchez, Chelsea could chance their arm with a cheeky low bid or a loan offer just before the window closes. The chance of that succeeding will depend on how desperate the Seagulls are to offload the keeper.

Negotiations are also ongoing for another Brighton player

At the time of writing, Chelsea have yet to make their third bid for Moises Caicedo but the Ecuadorian international is pressing for a move to Stamford Bridge.

You do feel a compromise will be reached on the player’s valuation at some point, but a fee in the region of £80m or above may be needed to secure the midfielder’s services.
