Chelsea transfer target Nico Williams says he won’t make a decision on his future before Euro 2024.
The Athletic Bilbao winger will be at the tournament in Germany with Spain and, speaking at the weekend, he said that despite being aware of the speculation, he is not thinking about a transfer at the moment:
“I refrain from everything the press says. I know my name is being circulated, but I am focused on the European Championship. I appreciate the affection and the opportunity to be the idol of other children.”
Spain play Croatia on Saturday before taking on Italy and Albania in their other two group stage matches.
Chelsea’s interest is said to be serious
Respected broadsheet newspaper The Telegraph revealed back in March that Williams is being pursued by the Blues. The 21-year-old does have a €50m (£43m) release clause in his contract which makes him an attractive target.
However, there have been reports that the forward has very high wage demands. He only signed a new four-year deal with Athletic back in December but he is said to be earning €200,000 a week.
Rival Premier League clubs have also targeted Williams
Arsenal, Liverpool and Aston Villa have been credited with an interest in the Spaniard too, but a lot could depend on who can agree personal terms with the player.
Chelsea could really do with reinforcements on the left wing. Neither Raheem Sterling nor Mykhailo Mudryk particularly impressed last season and Williams would certainly improve Enzo Maresca’s options on that flank.
If reports are to be believed, though, it seems a move for Crystal Palace’s Michael Olise has been prioritised by the Blues, despite the form of both Cole Palmer and Noni Madueke who prefer playing on that side of the pitch.
