Aston Villa forward Morgan Rogers remains a top target for Chelsea, according to The Telegraph journalist Matt Law.
Speaking on the London Is Blue podcast, Law said that the Blues would look to purchase the England international in an ideal world:
“I still think in Chelsea’s absolute perfect, dream scenario, they’d probably sign Morgan Rogers. “[Chelsea] are definitely still interested in Morgan Rogers. But the issue they’ve got is that A) he is the one player that Villa are telling everyone ‘no, we’re not selling him.’ Clearly, the price would have to be astronomically high on Rogers.”
“And B) even if that stance were to change, it would probably only change very, very late in the window, if Villa were forced into it because of other circumstances.”
How much would Rogers cost?
It is believed that a fee between £90m and £100m would be required to land the 22-year-old, and you would think that the Blues would only make such an offer if they offload several players first.
Substantial fees for the likes of Christopher Nkunku, Carney Chukwuemeka, Joao Felix or perhaps even Nicolas Jackson and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall may be needed to fund a late window bid for Rogers.
Aren’t Chelsea about to sign a player with similar traits?
Some will rightly point towards the club’s pursuit of Xavi Simons to suggest that Rogers is no longer required. However, it must be pointed out that the club do not always consider squad building when making signings.
Enzo Maresca effectively started his first season in charge with four No.10s – Cole Palmer, Nkunku, Chukwuemeka and Felix. If the latter three were to leave and Simons and Rogers came in, it wouldn’t be a complete surprise.
Of course, a lot depends on Villa changing their transfer stance, which hasn’t happened yet, and may not happen this summer.
