Chelsea are reportedly set to re-ignite their interest in AC Milan keeper Mike Maignan in January.
The Blues come off an awful weekend of football, which saw them lose 2-1 to Man United in a soggy game at Old Trafford. Blues goalkeeper Robert Sanchez was fairly sent off after just five minutes in the game, which is ultimately why Enzo Maresca‘s side lost.
It leaves Filip Jorgensen to start the next game, as Sanchez will be banned due to his red card. However, it leaves a lot more than that. Chelsea’s goalkeeper woes were a big talking point over the summer, yet it was something they decided against addressing.
The Blues may regret that now looking back, as they could do with a reliable option in goal, especially as they are competing in both the Premier League and Champions League this season.
Chelsea could re-ignite Maignan interest in January
Over the summer, there were reports saying that the Blues were in talks to sign Mike Maignan from AC Milan, however, they opted against signing him because the Serie A club set a £25m price tag on him.
Looking back, this may be seen as a bad decision, but it was a financial choice from Chelsea, who chose to spent their money elsewhere. However, following Sanchez’s sending off at the weekend, it seems they could re-ignite their interest in Maignan.
According to the Express, Chelsea could go in for the AC Milan keeper in January to help solve their worries at the back. However, if they don’t mind waiting until next season, they could make a pre-contract agreement with Maignan, as he only has six months on his deal at the San Siro.
This would mean that Maignan would join Chelsea at the end of the season for free, and to get one of the best shot stoppers in the world for free, would be an absolutely brilliant piece of business.
However, if the Blues can’t wait until then, they could potentially negotiate a fee with AC Milan to sign Maignan in January. This would suit the Italian club too, because it would mean that they won’t be selling the French international for free, and that they would get some form of financial return.
