Chelsea And United Both ‘Watching’ Situation As European Giants Bulk At Star’s £132K p/w Wage Demands

Chelsea and Manchester United are monitoring the situation of AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan, according to the Corriere della Sera.

The Italian newspaper claim the two clubs are “watching” developments, with the Rossoneri struggling to agree a new contract with their current no.1.

Negotiations over an extension have only just begun but it is already clear that there is a huge gulf between what Maignan’s representatives are demanding and what Milan are willing to pay.

The France international is hoping for a wage rise that would see him earning around €8m a season, which is approximately £132,000 a year.

Although there is no urgency to sell Maignan, whose current deal expires in 2026, that could change if it emerges that the keeper won’t sign on the dotted line.

Chelsea and United will have another rival in the battle for Maignan

The Corriere della Sera claim that Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich are also in the mix to buy the AC Milan star.

Thomas Tuchel’s side are believed to be seeking a long-term replacement for Manuel Neuer and they are reportedly in “pole position” for Maignan’s signature at the moment.

Will Chelsea buy a new No. 1?

The Blues also weighed up a move for Maignan last summer but, at the time, it was thought that the Frenchman’s €100m (£86m) valuation was way too high. They settled on recruiting Robert Sanchez from Brighton for a fraction of the price instead.

It has to be said, though, the Spaniard has yet to fully convince that he is the long-term solution in goal. Sanchez put in a good performance against his former club last weekend, but there are doubts about certain aspects of his game, such as his kicking and his ability to collect balls from corners and crosses. He may get until the end of the season to prove himself before an offer for Maignan is considered again.
