Chelsea have revived their interest in AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The France international was heavily linked with a switch to Stamford Bridge last month before the deal was put on the back burner but, speaking to GiveMeSport, Jones says a move is now back on the Blues’ agenda:

“The links with Mike Maignan are back and there have definitely been conversations around that potential move so I would not lose sight of that.”

It should be pointed out that Maignan’s asking price was reportedly as high as €80m (£69m), and that valuation is unlikely to have dropped as Milan are in a stronger financial position having recently received £60m from Newcastle for Sandro Tonali.

A goalkeeper is still not Chelsea’s number-one priority

The London club are currently focused on strengthening the midfield with Brighton’s Moise Caicedo and Lyon’s Rayan Cherki the main targets at the moment.

Recruiting a new keeper is not a high priority, with it being believed that manager Mauricio Pochettino is happy to keep Kepa Arrizabalaga as his first choice between the posts. It is, therefore, hard to see Chelsea splashing out close to £70m on Maignan.

There are cheaper alternatives to consider

When it was reported that the Blues had cooled their interest in Maignan and Inter’s Andre Onana, it was claimed that the focus would switch to young goalkeepers who could be recruited relatively cheaply.

Shakhtar Donetsk’s Anatoliy Trubin was mentioned as a potential candidate, although it is believed that the Ukrainian international could now be on his way to Italy.

Brighton’s Robert Sanchez has been suggested as another alternative, while Valencia’s Giorgi Mamardashvili has also been looked at, although the Georgian international is said to be a target for Bayern Munich as well. At the moment, there isn’t much certainty about who Chelsea will pursue in the goalkeeper department.
