Lothar Matthaus Urges Bundesliga Ace To Snub Chelsea As He Backs Him To Replace Man City Bound Player

Bayern Munich and Germany legend Lothar Matthaus says Chelsea target Mathys Tel should consider a loan move to Eintracht Frankfurt.

The 19-year-old could potentially be used as a makeweight with Christopher Nkunku moving in the other direction but Matthaus says he could replace Omar Marmoush, who is set to join Manchester City:

“A young player needs playing time to improve – you don’t get that in training or on the bench. As an advisor, I would say: ‘We are looking for a solution with Bayern Munich so that you can play for one or two years and get into the rhythm’.”

“He needs a club that really gives him the confidence to be a regular in the first eleven. When I look at Omar Marmoush’s position: from the left side to the top, that’s how I got to know Tel at Bayern Munich. He brings speed and a goal threat. Personally, I can imagine Tel as Marmoush’s successor on loan.”

Why do Chelsea want Tel?

The Blues have tracked the Frenchman for several years and his ability to play as both a winger and striker could help reinforce two key positions in Enzo Maresca’s squad.

Mykhailo Mudryk’s preliminary drugs ban means that there would be space for Tel on the left wing, and he would provide stiff competition for Jadon Sancho.

If Nkunku does move in the other direction to Bayern, Tel could also provide cover for Nicolas Jackson through the middle.

What is the situation with Nkunku?

The 27-year-old’s agent is said to be in talks with Bayern and the Bundesliga side are reportedly very keen on securing the player’s services.

However, Chelsea are believed to be demanding €70m (£59m) for Nkunku if Tel is not included in the deal so that could be a potential stumbling block.
