Chelsea legend John Terry believes his former club are “missing” marquee signings and it could hinder their chances of winning Premier League titles on a regular basis.

The Blues’ policy of signing young players has begun to bear fruit in recent months, with Enzo Maresca‘s side having won both the Conference League and Club World Cup.

However, Terry thinks that if this team are to compete with Premier League champions Liverpool, they will also need to pursue deals for the very best in the world:

“I think the only thing we [Chelsea] are missing at the moment is those marquee signings. I’d love to see us [Chelsea] in the mix for big signings if we want to be back to our very best and at the top winning Premier Leagues year after year. [This Season], I think Liverpool are the strongest side.”

Will Chelsea change their transfer policy?

One of the main barriers to the Blues bringing in so-called ‘marquee signings’ is the wages required. After Clearlake Capital took on a more prominent role at the club, the highest salary handed out is still the £180,000 a week given to Enzo Fernandez.

When you consider that Manchester City’s Erling Haaland takes home £525,000 a week, there is a vast chasm between the salary demands of the world’s best and what Chelsea are prepared to pay.

For that reason, you can’t see the Blues altering their approach in the transfer market. By recruiting young players, they don’t need to massively increase the wage budget.

Who are the favourites for the Premier League title?

The bookmakers have given Liverpool the shortest odds to retain their crown, with pricing between 6/5 and 13/10. Arsenal are second among the runners and riders (priced between 7/4 and 15/8).

Chelsea, meanwhile, are currently 7/1 or 8/1 with the bookies, which is pretty similar odds to Manchester City.
