Chelsea have reportedly re-ignited their interest in Crystal Palace centre-back Marc Guehi, who was subject to transfer bids from Newcastle in the summer.
The Blues previously held interest in their former academy product during the summer transfer window, however, decided against placing a bid for the England international.
Guehi, 24, has made 19 Premier League appearances this season, scoring twice for the Eagles, whose form has improved over the last two months under Oliver Glasner.
According to Sky Sports, Chelsea want to sign Guehi in order to help with the fact that star centre-back Wesley Fofana is out with a hamstring injury for at least two more months, with reports suggesting that he could miss the remainder of the season.
Guehi could help provide Chelsea with an immediate starter to replace Fofana, and he could help bolster a Chelsea defence which still isn’t on the level of title hopefuls Liverpool and Arsenal.
The Blues currently sit fourth in the Premier League table, and are now 10 points and a game in hand away from league leaders Liverpool.
Guehi featured in Chelsea’s last game when Palace were able to salvage a point from the Blues after Jean Phillipe-Mateta scored a late equaliser to finish the game at 1-1.
How much would Guehi cost Chelsea?
The Palace centre-back isn’t expected to be cheap, as Palace rejected several bids during the summer from Newcastle, with the highest being £65m.
Palace had previously set a price-tag of £70m for Guehi who also attracted interest from league leaders Liverpool during the summer transfer window.
However, the Reds aren’t expected to make a move for the centre-back in January, and so, Enzo Maresca and Chelsea could see themselves being the front-runners to land the England international.
The Blues linked with several centre-backs
Chelsea haven’t just been linked with Guehi at the centre-back position, as the Blues are also said to be keen on Benfica defender Tomas Araujo, who was ironically subject to a bid from Crystal Palace in summer.
The 22-year-old has a £83m release clause in his contract so Chelsea could still make an attempt to sign the defender even if Benfica don’t want to offload him.
Furthermore, Nottingham Forest defender Murillo had previously generated interest from Chelsea, although, seeing as Forest are currently one place above the Blues in the Premier League table, they would likely refrain from selling him to a rival.
