Chelsea are among the clubs keeping tabs on Leroy Sane’s contract situation at Bayern Munich, according to Sport.
The former Manchester City winger has less than 18 months remaining on his current deal and he has yet to sign an extension.
Sane has been in outstanding form this season, having scored 9 goals and provided 11 assists, but speculation about his future at the Allianz Arena has been bubbling under the surface.
Sport claims that both Chelsea and Liverpool have “made moves” in recent months to ascertain the player’s interest in returning to the Premier League.
Barcelona also believed they had a chance of signing Sane as the German had the same agent as one of their players, Marcos Alonso.
Sane’s situation has changed
While it appeared that, until recently, the 28-year-old would be leaving Bayern, he has now switched representatives. Christian Schmid also represents teammate Jamal Musiala, and he has a good relationship with the Bundesliga champions.
It means that the chances of Chelsea securing the winger’s services this summer have been drastically reduced, with a new contract now expected to be signed.
Why were Chelsea considering a move for Sane?
While he is older than the targets that the Blues would normally go after, there was the possibility of securing a top-class forward for a relatively reasonable price, considering his contract situation.
On top of that, with the likes of Mykhailo Mudryk and (to a lesser extent) Raheem Sterling struggling for form, strengthening the club’s options out wide is likely to be high on the agenda for manager Mauricio Pochettino.
From the look of things, though, Chelsea will probably have to consider alternative targets to Sane. Unless the German international makes another U-Turn on his future, it seems like he will be staying at Bayern beyond the end of this campaign.
