Chelsea are among the clubs that are “most interested” in snapping up Lille forward Jonathan David, according to Calciomercato.com.
The Italian website claims that Juventus and the Blues are the two leading contenders to sign the Canadian international.
David is out of contract at the end of the season and it is looking almost certain that he will move on a free transfer.
Chelsea were among the clubs named as potential suitors for the 24-year-old back in the summer but, at the time, there were rumours that his agent was demanding a sizeable amount of money.
It consequently led to Enzo Maresca’s side focusing their attention on recruiting Victor Osimhen from Napoli instead.
David is in outstanding form
The striker has already scored 13 goals in 18 appearances for Lille this campaign, with his latest coming against Juve in the Champions League during a 1-1 draw on Tuesday night.
David has been particularly impressive on the European stage, having scored the winner against Real Madrid and bagging a brace versus Atletico Madrid. It means Lille are level on points with Manchester City and Arsenal in 14th place after 4 games.
Do Chelsea need a No.9?
Due to the form of Nicolas Jackson, questions have been asked about whether the Blues should revive their attempts to buy another forward.
However, even though Maresca has effectively been using Christopher Nkunku as a backup option up front, the Frenchman is more comfortable playing in deeper positions.
David would, therefore, provide stiff competition for Jackson if he is brought in next summer. The fact that he is likely to be available for free too makes it an even more attractive deal, especially when you consider his outstanding form. It is definitely a transfer that fans should keep an eye on.
