David Ornstein Confirms Chelsea Are Chasing South American Star Who Started Just 3 League Games Last Season

Chelsea have revived their interest in Aston Villa striker Jhon Duran, according to The Athletic reporter David Ornstein.

The Blues are keen on reinforcing their options up front and Ornstein says the 20-year-old is someone that the club are seriously considering pursuing:

“Colombia international Duran, 20, was considered by Chelsea in January and is again among the candidates to strengthen their frontline this summer, while enquiries have also arrived from Italy, Saudi Arabia and Spain.”

It remains to be seen whether Villa would be willing to sell the forward but Chelsea may have an ace up their sleeve.

Gallagher is a target for the Villans

Ornstein has also confirmed that Unai Emery’s side have made enquiries about the availability of Conor Gallagher. The England international has a year left on his contract and talks over an extension have stalled.

Chelsea are said to be holding out for around £50m for the 24-year-old but, if Duran was included in Villa’s offer, it may tempt the Blues into doing a deal.

What do Chelsea fans need to know about Duran?

The Colombian started out his career at Envigado before making the switch to MLS side Chicago Fire in the 2022 January transfer window.

Duran ended up staying in the United States for only a year, scoring 8 goals and providing 6 assists in 28 appearances, before he was snapped by Villa for an initial £14.75m at the beginning of 2023.

The striker spent the second half of the 2022/23 season making cameos off the bench, and he didn’t really kick on to become a regular starter in the following campaign either.

Duran started just 3 league matches in 2023/24, with his standout moment being the brace he scored against Liverpool in a 3-3 draw last month. He hit the back of the net just 8 times in total over 37 appearances.
