Chelsea could do with signing another number nine in the January transfer window to add to their options up front.
The Blues are going well at the moment, they won their last game 3-0 against Wolves, and now find themselves third in the Premier League table, six points off league leaders Arsenal. They are potentially dark horses for a title fight with Enzo Maresca, and if they strengthen in January, who knows where they will finish.
Chelsea’s striker position has been somewhat of an issue this season, though, as they have been playing Joao Pedro there, but he’s been inconsistent, and he can also play as a 10. Liam Delap is another option, but he’s been injured for a long period, and he’s relatively inexperienced.
The Blues could do with signing an experienced Premier League striker to add to their attacking Arsenal, and they could see the perfect chance arising in January.
Chelsea should sign Ivan Toney in January
Ivan Toney made the controversial move from Brentford to Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli in the summer of 2024, but now it seems he wants a return to the Premier League in January to have a shot at getting into Thomas Tuchel’s World Cup squad in the summer.
According to the Evening Standard, Tottenham, Fulham and West Ham are all eyeing up a move for Toney, alongside several other Premier League clubs, so why don’t Chelsea consider going after him.
Toney has an estimated market value of just £22m, and he is a proven Premier League striker. During his time at Brentford, Toney made 141 appearances in all competitions, scoring 72 goals, and providing 23 assists. He became one of the best strikers in the Premier League, and arguably the best penalty taker in the world.
If Chelsea signed him, it would allow Joao Pedro to play in his preferred number 10 position, and it would ease some of the pressure on Liam Delap, and give him a ‘mentor’ to work under, as Delap is just 22.
Toney is very well-regarded in the Premier League too, Man City boss Pep Guardiola, previously called him “dangerous” when he said on Eurosport in 2024. “He is so dangerous.” Guardiola said, “He’s a master at using his body for the second ball… Good finishing. You can link with him; he’s one of the best I’ve ever seen (at that hold-up play).
“A few weeks ago the goal we conceded (a goal to Toney). We defended not properly but he did it really well. (Brentford) have the ability with Ivan Toney. He’s a master player. A really good player.”
