Chelsea Will Have First Option To Sign Spanish Star Who Is About To Seal £10.3M Transfer To Another Club

Chelsea will be given first refusal by Sporting Lisbon for right-back Ivan Fresneda, according to Record (via Sport Witness).

The Spaniard is set to complete his move to Portugal from Real Valladolid for a fee that could rise to €12m (£10.3m).

However, it is believed that Chelsea were originally favourites to buy Fresneda, only for the deal to collapse due to Financial Fairplay restrictions.

The intention was for the Blues to sign the 18-year-old and then loan the player out, with talks having been held with his agent last week in order to secure the defender’s signature.

After the deal fell through, it has since emerged that Sporting have promised Chelsea that they will be notified if a club approaches them for Fresneda in the future.

The two teams are known to have a good relationship and this agreement means they will still have the opportunity to buy a top young talent.

A number of Premier League clubs have tried to sign Fresneda

Arsenal were the first team who looked into buying the teenager back in January before deciding against making an offer for the fullback.

Subsequently, the likes of West Ham, Crystal Palace and Chelsea have also considered tabling bids for Fresneda, with the Blues seemingly the closest to snapping him up.

Chelsea have been looking at other right-backs

Reports in the Spanish media over the weekend have suggested that Mauricio Pochettino’s side have taken a keen interest in Bayer Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong.

The wingback has been in great form over the past twelve months and he could be considered if the Blues are seriously looking at replacing the injured Reece James.

With the club captain only expected to be sidelined for a few weeks, though, Chelsea may focus their efforts on recruiting an out-and-out winger instead ahead of the transfer deadline.
