REPORT: Chelsea Among The ‘Top Clubs’ Contemplating Move For £30M Rated Shot Stopper

Chelsea are one of the “top clubs” who have enquired about Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, according to Relevo.com.

The Spanish website claims that the Georgian’s performances at the European Championships would have dispelled any doubts about his ability to play at the highest level.

Mamardashvili has been in outstanding form during the group stages of the tournament, having made 22 saves across the three matches, and keeping a clean sheet in his country’s crucial 2-0 win over Portugal on Wednesday evening.

Up until now, teams have been reluctant to match Valencia’s €35m (£30m) asking price, with the highest bid of €25m (£21m) being tabled by Newcastle. However, the keeper is unlikely to be short of suitors over the coming weeks.

Premier League teams are circling Mamardashvili

Relevo report that “several clubs with large financial budgets” from England are weighing up offers for the 23-year-old.

The fact that they mention Chelsea, Manchester United and Newcastle in their report suggests that those are the likeliest candidates to table a formal proposal. There is also some interest from Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid but they would only enter the running if they dispense with their current goalkeepers first.

Will Chelsea make a move for the Valencia star?

Most fans would agree that the Blues could do with strengthening their options in goal. Neither Robert Sanchez nor Djordje Petrovic were particularly convincing last campaign (with the latter actually performing worse statistically).

At the moment, though, it appears the recruitment department are prioritising other areas. A new striker, a wide player, a centre-back and potentially a left-back all seem to be higher up the agenda.

Mamardashvili is a top-class keeper, though, and he is still young, so you would think that he’d be a perfect addition to the squad.
