A number of teams are in negotiations to sign Chelsea target Gabri Veiga, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

The Celta Vigo midfielder has a €40m (£34m) release clause in his contract but Romano says clubs are trying to buy the player for below that amount, with Chelsea likely to be one of those involved:

“Gabri Veiga, in the media things have gone a bit quiet. But I can tell you that behind the scenes, things are happening, In terms of contacts. We know he has a release clause of around £40m, but clubs think they can get a deal done for cheaper.”

“There is interest again from the Premier League. We know Chelsea are well informed on Veiga. Let’s see if they will bid, but for sure he’s one of the players they’re considering. Not only Chelsea, but they are watching.”

Chelsea are looking at a lot of midfielders

In addition to Veiga, the Blues have been linked with the likes of Ajax’s Mohammed Kudus, Lyon’s Rayan Cherki and Crystal Palace’s Michael Olise over the past couple of weeks.

It is believed that personal terms with Kudus are close to being agreed but it remains to be seen whether Mauricio Pochettino’s side will pay the £40m needed to get him.

Interest in Cherki has cooled somewhat due to the Frenchman’s asking price, while there have been reports of a bid for Olise, although that hasn’t been substantiated.

An agreement for the club’s key transfer target remains elusive

Chelsea’s number one priority remains Brighton’s Moises Caicedo, but talks have stalled over the Seagulls’ valuation.

While the London club have been hoping to do a deal closer to £80m, Caicedo’s team are insisting on a fee nearer £100m. It is difficult to know at this stage whether a breakthrough in negotiations will be found.
