Chelsea are expected to “hold talks” about signing Celta Vigo attacking midfielder Gabri Veiga “next week”, according to The Guardian.

The Blues are currently focused on securing the services of Brighton’s Moises Caicedo, but it appears a move for a second midfield player is also in the pipeline.

Veiga has a €40m (£34m) release clause in his contract so, if Mauricio Pochettino’s side do decide to make a formal approach, that is the price they will have to match to sign the player.

Whether the club would try and pay in instalments, like they did with Nicolas Jackson, it is not known but they may not want to be locked in negotiations for too long.

The Guardian report that Manchester City, Liverpool, Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona are also keen on securing the Spaniard’s signature.

The buyout clause clearly makes Veiga an attractive target, especially after the midfielder’s impressive displays for Celta, coming off the back of a season where he scored 11 league goals.

Chelsea are looking at replacements for Mason Mount

Following Mount’s move to Manchester United earlier this week, it is not a surprise that Chelsea are now stepping up plans to replace the England international.

Veiga does seem to fit the bill as he is an attacking midfielder who has a knack for scoring goals. The Blues have, though, been linked with a number of other players.

Reports in the Italian press have mentioned Roma’s Paulo Dybala as a potential option, although transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has played down those claims.

The club have reportedly enquired about Lyon’s Rayan Cherki as well, while the likes of Bayer Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz and Ajax’s Mohammed Kudus have been suggested as other alternatives. For now, though, it looks as if Veiga is the preferred target, so we shall see if negotiations do take place.
