Ex-Chelsea midfielder Emmanuel Petit says his former club should not sign another striker to provide competition for Nicolas Jackson.
Rumours about interest in Newcastle’s Alexander Isak and Ipswich’s Liam Delap have surfaced in recent weeks but, speaking exclusively to Chelsea News on behalf of Casino Utan Spelpaus, Petit was adamant that the Blues should keep faith with their current No.9:
“Why do Chelsea need to sign a new striker? What for? Explain to me because last season he [Jackson] scored 14 Premier League goals in his first season and he’s got nine already this season. I think he’s doing well.”
“He had a really decent season last season, honestly. Remember the situation of Chelsea last season. It was not easy for the players to handle the situation. With Maresca in the driving seat, his management has been ruthless.”
“There is a lot of pressure at Chelsea, the players are young, they are learning. They come from different countries with different mentalities, step by step they are improving. Chelsea don’t need to go out and sign another striker, they should have confidence in Jackson.”
Chelsea fans want an elite striker
While many will agree with Petit’s sentiment that Jackson has performed well, there is still a feeling that the club will not win trophies until they recruit a top-drawer finisher.
As we saw in the last away fixture against Crystal Palace, Jackson’s finishing can be wayward. Many supporters still have doubts over whether his consistency in front of goal will improve as he matures.
What will happen if Nkunku leaves Stamford Bridge?
Bayern Munich are believed to be interested in signing Christopher Nkunku and the Frenchman’s departure could lead to Chelsea seeking a new forward before the January transfer window closes.
It has been suggested that Mathys Tel would be the player that the London club would like to sign but, at the moment, there is no indication that Bayern are willing to part ways with the forward in exchange for Nkunku. It is, though, a situation to keep a close eye on.
