Chelsea are set to receive £21.5m by selling goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic to newly-promoted side Sunderland.
The Blues have already spent a lot of money this summer, as they have signed the likes of Liam Delap, Joao Pedro, and Jamie Gittens. Furthermore, they remain linked to expensive targets such as Alejandro Garnacho and Hugo Ekitike, who could amount to well over £100m together.
In order to fund their habit of spending big this summer, Chelsea will need to sell several players to ensure they balance the books. Furthermore, they don’t want to get into any issues regarding Profitability and Sustainability Rules.
One position of interest is the goalkeeper spot. They have already sold Kepa Arrizabalaga to rivals Arsenal, but still have the likes of Robert Sanchez, Filip Jorgensen, Mike Penders and Djordje Petrovic.
However, it seems that the latter is on the way out of Stamford Bridge. According to a report by the Mirror, Sunderland are set to sign the 25-year-old keeper, as they aim to build a team capable of staying in the Premier League.
Petrovic’s transfer fee is expected to be £21.5m, meaning that Chelsea could get a nice boost to their transfer funds this summer by selling the Serbian. Last season, the 25-year-old was on loan at French side Strasbourg, he made 31 appearances, conceding 38 goals and keeping an impressive 10 clean sheets.
Who will start in goal for Chelsea next season?
With Petrovic leaving, it is a big boost to Robert Sanchez, who at the moment is likely the first choice keeper at Chelsea, despite their previous desire to replace him.
It looked as though the Blues would sign AC Milan keeper Mike Maignan, but that interest cooled after they opted against paying £25m to sign the Frenchman, who only has one year left on his contract at the Italian club.
Other than Maignan, Borussia Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel was linked in the Spring, but there haven’t been many reports linking the Swiss international with a move to Stamford Bridge since. At this rate, it looks as though Sanchez will be the starter.
