Chelsea have “considered” ex-Manchester United keeper David De Gea as they look to strengthen their options in goal, according to 90min.com.

The Spaniard has not found a club since being let go on a free transfer at the start of July and it appears he is being looked at as a potential replacement for Kepa Arrizabalaga.

It is believed the Blues’ current number one will join Real Madrid on a season-long loan, leaving manager Mauricio Pochettino with just two senior goalkeepers in Robert Sanchez and Marcus Bettinelli.

Chelsea’s options are pretty limited due to financial constraints. It’s very possible that they will shell out the best part of £170m on both Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia.

There will, therefore, be little to no money left over to recruit a keeper, so potential loans and free agents are being considered instead.

Chelsea have looked at alternatives

Porto keeper Diogo Costa is a player that is well-liked in the Blues’ scouting department but there is no way that the London club can afford the Portuguese international at the moment.

Valencia’s Giorgi Mamadashvili is also on Chelsea’s radar and, while he would be a lot cheaper than Costa, it is difficult to see a deal materialising without sales being made first.

How does De Gea compare to Kepa?

If we look at some of the key statistics from last season in the Premier League (taken from FBRef), De Gea had a 71.1% save percentage, which is only slightly below Kepa (73.3%). It is, however, a lot higher than Robert Sanchez (64.8%).

When we compare post-shot xG to the number of goals actually conceded, Kepa again comes out on top with a +5.0 score with De Gea managing -0.7.

Based on the numbers, De Gea is likely to be a downgrade on Kepa, but he may still be a better option than Sanchez.
