Chelsea are interested in signing Red Bull Salzburg fullback Amar Dedic, according to The Sun.

The English tabloid claims that the Blues have been “keeping a close eye” on the Bosnian international, sending scouts on multiple occasions to see him in action.

Dedic has been in very good form, scoring 5 goals and providing 3 assists in 25 appearances, having also captained Salzburg 17 times this season despite only being 21 years of age.

He is a right-back by trade, although he can be deployed at centre-half or on the left-hand side of defence if required.

Chelsea could be considering replacements for Reece James

The Blues captain suffered another hamstring injury during the 2-0 defeat to Everton earlier this month and a decision is still yet to be made on whether the defender needs surgery.

If James does go under the knife, he will likely be sidelined for several months. That is maybe why the club’s recruitment team have been keeping tabs on Dedic just in case James is out for an extended period.

There will be competition for Dedic’s signature

The Bosnian was reportedly the subject of a bid from Serie A side Roma last summer, but their €25m proposal was turned down by Salzburg at the time. It is believed that the Giallorossi have retained an interest in the player.

Newcastle have also been watching Dedic. However, it is doubtful whether the Magpies would make a move for the fullback next month. They already have Kieran Trippier in their squad, while they spent the best part of £40m to bring in Tino Livramento from Southampton to provide cover.

Chelsea, of course, have Malo Gusto and Axel Disasi who can play on the right-hand side of defence so finding a replacement for James is not urgent, but it appears Mauricio Pochettino’s side are keen on Dedic.
