Chelsea defender Alfie Gilchrist could be sent out on loan for the start of next season, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.

The 20-year-old has just signed a new contract, keeping him at Stamford Bridge until the summer of 2026 but, writing in his Daily Briefing column, Romano says that the Blues have held “internal talks” about letting him leave on a temporary basis:

“Next season it is possible that the defender will go out on loan, internal talks are still taking place over this but for sure Chelsea believe that he’s an important talent to develop for the future.”

“That’s why the West London club wanted to make sure his contract situation was 100% sorted with a good salary and why they decided to proceed with offering Gilchrist a new deal. The player is super happy about this latest contract as he loves Chelsea and will try to make steps forward within the club over the coming years.”

Gilchrist needs to be playing on a regular basis

The centre-back is no longer a teenager and he needs to be getting more minutes so he can continue to develop his game. He is unlikely to be a regular starter for the Blues next campaign, with the club expected to focus on reinforcing the defence during the next transfer window.

A loan move could, therefore, work out for all parties. The ideal scenario would be to find another Premier League club who would be prepared to give him regular starts; similar to Levi Colwill’s time at Brighton.

Chelsea are expected to sign at least one centre-half this summer

With Thiago Silva set to leave the Blues when his contract expires in June, it would suggest that Gilchrist would have more starting opportunities if he stays.

However, reports indicate that the club will go into the market to sign a replacement for Silva, with Sporting Lisbon’s Ousmane Diomande said to be a key target. If the Ivorian is brought in, it would leave little room for Gilchrist. In that situation, the Englishman would probably be better off moving elsewhere.
