Chelsea remain “interested” in signing Manchester United winger Alejandro Garnacho, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.
The Blues have been focused on recruiting Jamie Gittens from Borussia Dortmund but they could still switch their focus to Garnacho. However, Romano does think that the likelihood of the player moving to Stamford Bridge is pretty low:
“Alejandro Garnacho will leave Manchester United, as previously reported. He could stay in England, though, as Chelsea are interested in signing the Argentine. There’s a 35% chance this will happen.”
One of the main reasons for that is probably Garnacho’s asking price, which has reportedly increased to £70m.
What is the latest news on Gittens?
It is believed that Chelsea walked away from negotiations after offering to pay £45m up front with another £10m in performance-related add-ons.
Reports in Germany suggest that Dortmund are holding out for a fee between €65m (£55m) and €70m (£59m), which means the two sides are not that far apart.
Even so, it appears the move for Gittens is now on the back burner, with the player having been named in Dortmund’s squad for the Club World Cup.
Are Chelsea targeting any other wingers?
In addition to Garnacho and Gittens, the London club have also been credited with an interest in Brighton’s Joao Pedro and West Ham’s Mohammed Kudus, but neither would be a perfect fit for what head coach Enzo Maresca is looking for.
Pedro is generally at his best when asked to play as a No.10 or false nine, even though he has played regularly on the left flank in the past. Kudus is more comfortable on the wing, but he is left-footed, which means he would be better suited to replacing Noni Madueke on the right-hand side of the front three.
