Chelsea are “pressing” ahead with plans to snap up San Lorenzo wingback Agustin Giay, according to Tuttomercatoweb.com.
The Italian website claims that the Blues made their interest known by “initiating contact” with the 20-year-old’s agent Leo Rodriguez.
It is believed that a multi-year contract proposal has been made for Giay and there is likely to be more movement on this transfer in the near future.
A number of high-profile clubs are said to have kept tabs on the Argentinian Under 20 international’s progress in recent months but it appears as if Chelsea are the ones keenest to secure his signature.
What do Chelsea fans need to know about Giay?
The youngster came through the youth ranks of San Lorenzo before making his senior debut for the Argentinian Primera Division side in April 2022 against Union Santa Fe.
Since then, Giay has racked up 84 first-team appearances, being deployed mostly as a right wingback. He can, however, be used as a conventional fullback as well as a winger.
At international level, the defender captained Argentina at the Under 20 World Cup last year, where his team lost to Nigeria in the round of 16.
Giay has already spoken about interest from other clubs
Speaking to Tuttomercatoweb a few months ago, when he was linked with a move to Italy, Giay said that he was flattered by the interest being shown in him:
“I’m happy that people are talking about me. It means that I’m doing things well. I have to continue working. Italy is one of the most important championships. Here we watch Italian football a lot. It would be nice to play it.”
Despite being keen on Serie A, though, it appears Giay could well be on the way to the Premier League if Chelsea can wrap up a deal.
