TalkSPORT pundit Jason Cundy believes his former club Chelsea should “definitely” consider signing Aaron Ramsdale from Southampton this summer.
The 26-year-old was sold by Arsenal for £20m back in August but Cundy claims that he would be an improvement on the Blues’ current options in goal.
“The goalkeeper has turned out to be a massive problem for Chelsea. [Filip] Jorgensen dropped an absolute dolly against Aston Villa.”
“We did enough to get a point there and the keeper made a howler, it was devastating for Chelsea. I would definitely have Ramsdale. That’s an improvement.”
Ramsdale has had a very poor season
Despite Cundy’s suggestion that the former Gunners No.1 would be an improvement on Enzo Maresca’s current goalkeepers, his form during his first campaign with Southampton has been woeful, to say the least.
Ramsdale’s save percentage of 66.9% is among the worst in the league, while he has let in 3.8 more goals than his post-shot xG which is the joint-worst in the division, along with Wolves’ Jose Sa.
Chelsea are not even targeting a new No.1 goalkeeper
While nearly every supporter would like the club to bring in a top-class shot-shopper, it doesn’t seem to be a priority for the recruitment department.
With Mike Penders joining from Genk at the end of the season, and Djordje Petrovic returning from his loan spell at Strasbourg, Maresca will have four keepers to choose from heading into next season.
For that reason, the club are currently focused on signing a striker, a midfielder and a left winger. Whether their plans will change over the coming weeks, we shall have to see. By the sound of things, though, there is very little prospect of Ramsdale making the switch to Stamford Bridge in the next transfer window.
